We thought she’d be perfect. You thought she’d be perfect. Even original Ghostbuster Bill Murray thought she’d be perfect.

So why isn’t Emma Stone among the names in the new all-female Ghostbusters reboot? As Stone revealed to WSJ, it’s not that the studio didn’t want her — she didn’t want them.

Despite the studio’s interest in the actress, Stone balked at committing to another major franchise. “It just didn’t feel like the right time for me,” she said. “A franchise is a big commitment—it’s a whole thing. I think maybe I need a minute before I dive back into that water.”

After appearing in two Spider-Man movies, Stone can’t be blamed for seeing another major series as just another major commitment, especially after her Oscar-nominated appearance in the Best Picture-winning Birdman. She talked about craving more challenging roles, like her recent turn as Cabaret’s Sally Bowles on Broadway:

“I’m interested in things that are really scary and ambitious lately. Obviously Birdman was like that. And then doing the play, I was like, ‘This feels like it could totally go wrong every single day.’ And something about that feels vital. Is that a stupid thing to say?”

Though Stone did give her blessing to the new Ghostbusters. “The script was really funny,” she said.

And we have to say, the four actresses appearing in Stone’s place are just as (if not more) hilarious:
